Our ultimate guide to fabric calculators will walk you through everything you need to know, from understanding yardage to using online tools and formulas to ensure a perfect fit.

What is a Fabric Calculator?

A fabric calculator is an essential resource for estimating fabric needs, tailored specifically for projects like reupholstering furniture, sewing curtains, or crafting throw pillows. Whether you’re reupholstering furniture, sewing curtains, or creating throw pillows, these calculators simplify the math and ensure you purchase the right amount of fabric.

Benefits of using a fabric calculator

Save Money

Ensure you purchase the perfect amount of fabric by calculating precise requirements, avoiding costly overbuying or frustrating shortages.

Save Time

Skip the guesswork and streamline your shopping process.

Reduce Waste

Ensure sustainable practices by purchasing only what you need.

Achieve Precision

Careful measurements mean better results, whether for upholstery or sewing.

Yardage Guide

Yardage estimates based on 54" wide fabric. Yardage needed may vary depending on the specific job application and pattern repeat. This chart is a tool for estimates only; we cannot be held responsible for discrepancies in yardage.

Step 1. Select Furniture Type

Step 2. Select Fabric Orientation

Fabric Orientation Guide

Railroaded (RR):

  • The pattern or design runs horizontally across the width of the fabric (from selvage to selvage).
  • When you unroll the fabric, you'll see the top of the pattern at one selvage and the bottom at the opposite selvage.
  • This orientation can minimize seams on items like sofas, because you can run the fabric in one continuous piece horizontally.

Up The Roll (UTR):

  • Sometimes also called "Regular Run," "Up the Bolt," or simply "Up."
  • The pattern runs vertically along the length of the fabric roll.
  • When you unroll it, the top of the pattern starts at one end of the roll and the bottom is at the other end.

In practical terms, knowing whether a fabric is RR or UTR affects how upholsterers cut and position the fabric on furniture to ensure the pattern is oriented correctly.

How to Use a Fabric Calculator

Step 1: Gather Your Measurements

For precise calculations, measure the dimensions of your project:

Furniture Reupholstery: Measure the length, width, and height of each section.

Curtains and Drapes: Measure the window's width and desired curtain length, accounting for pleats and hems.

Sewing Projects: Note dimensions for patterns, seam allowances, and extra material for mistakes.

Step 2: Choose the Right Fabric

Your fabric choice impacts how much you need. Factors include:

Pattern Repeat: Large patterns may require extra fabric for matching.

Fabric Width: Most fabrics are 45" or 54" wide, affecting yardage calculations.

Step 3: Input Data into a Fabric Calculator

Use our online fabric calculator to simplify fabric estimation for your project dimensions. Enter your measurements, and let the tool do the math.

Step 4: Review Results

The calculator provides:
